Armenia has carried out extensive work regarding the issue of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, said Karen Andreasyan, Armenia’s Representative for International Legal Affairs, speaking to reporters at the National Assembly on Wednesday.
“Even before my appointment, my predecessors and colleagues had already done an exceptional amount of work—submitting all necessary complaints and petitions to international bodies,” Andreasyan stated. “The efforts were of such high quality that there was little left for me to add. At this stage, we simply need to await the next steps in the process, such as the decisions of international judicial bodies.”
Andreasyan made these remarks in response to a question about numerous reports of torture of Armenian prisoners of war held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and what actions were being taken in this regard.
“We must also wait for further developments in the peace process and for the results of the significant diplomatic work currently being carried out by several of our institutions—the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, various specialized agencies, and others,” he said. “I prefer not to comment further on this matter, as the ongoing negotiations fall within their competence. My role is to ensure that our international legal disputes—through which we have raised the painful issues of prisoners and the missing—ultimately receive a proper judicial resolution.”
