During the interactive dialogue of the Third Committee of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly with the Chair of the UN Committee against Torture, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Suzanna Martirosyan, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the UN, reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to the universal and absolute eradication of torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
She expressed deep concern that in certain countries, credible reports of torture continue to be recorded, both in detention facilities and in the context of armed conflicts—often motivated by political reasons, which constitutes a clear violation of international law.
Reference was made to the latest concluding observations of the UN Committee against Torture, in which the Committee expressed serious concern over the continued detention of 23 Armenians. These concerns remain relevant, as the situation continues to endanger the rights, safety, and dignity of the victims, particularly given the absence of involvement by international bodies, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
