Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan delivered a speech at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament on the topic of \u201cDefending Democracy,\u201d expressing concern over Azerbaijan\u2019s recent false statements about Armenia\u2019s alleged military actions, which are escalating tensions at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, he emphasized the importance of confidence-building measures, such as the EU civilian mission and arms control mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMost of the issues requiring resolution have either already been included in the agreement or are being addressed through the working group established within its framework,\u201d Simonyan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his speech, the Speaker noted: \u201cIt is an honor for me to speak in this hall, which has worked for more than seven decades to unite Europe around a common system of values, inspired by a deep belief in the dignity of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The madness of our times must be seen with absolute clarity: the storm is not approaching; it is already here. Chaos is hidden in the haze of double-edged rhetoric. Fact is a lie, the ally is the enemy, the victim is the aggressor, the truth is a lie, and the innocent is the guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“So many precious things have been reduced to ashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The pillars of liberalism are cracking, and the sacred fire of freedom is dying out. Democracy is at risk,\u201d said Simonyan, adding, \u201cEurope, as the cradle of the Enlightenment, must again stand for freedom. Only through united and unwavering efforts can the fragile flower of democracy bloom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Simonyan mentioned that Armenia, for its part, remains committed to the path of democracy. \u201cFor us, democracy is not only a system of governance but also the foundation of our national identity and security – the driving force behind our aspirations. The Velvet Revolution of 2018 was a turning point in our history,\u201d said the Speaker, noting that the revolution led to transparent elections, independent institutions, and a government free from corruption in Armenia. \u201cOur goal is clear: to build an open and accountable system where every citizen feels empowered and secure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Simonyan stated that to achieve these goals, Armenia has initiated ambitious reforms with the support of the Council of Europe. \u201cThe Council of Europe Action Plan is an important tool for Armenia to strengthen public trust in our institutions and align them with European standards. Judicial independence, freedom of the press, and the fight against corruption remain at the core of our agenda. In this context, we attach particular importance to the Council of Europe\u2019s high assessment of Armenia\u2019s progress toward establishing a sustainable democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI would also like to touch upon the peace process with Azerbaijan. You are undoubtedly aware that Armenia and Azerbaijan have fully agreed on the text of the peace treaty. We welcome this progress and believe that peaceful coexistence and regional cooperation are the best guarantees of security and prosperity. Armenia’s Crossroads of Peace initiative aims to relaunch regional communications and promote economic development based on mutual respect and sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“However, I must note that humanitarian issues remain unresolved. Armenian prisoners of war and civilians in Azerbaijan continue to face prolonged detention, inhumane treatment and sham trials. The immediate release of these prisoners is a priority.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n “Furthermore, I am concerned about Azerbaijan\u2019s recent false statements regarding alleged military actions by Armenia, which are further exacerbating tensions at the border. In this context, we emphasize the importance of confidence-building measures, such as the EU civilian mission and arms control mechanisms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The NA speaker reaffirmed Armenia\u2019s readiness to coordinate with Azerbaijan on the dates and venue for signing the agreement. \u201cWe hope that Azerbaijan shares our aspiration to enter a new era.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe 25th anniversary of Armenia\u2019s membership in the Council of Europe is approaching. On this occasion, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to democratic values, which we will continue to defend without compromise.
