Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued this statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCanada welcomes last week\u2019s agreements between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy initialling the peace agreement and both acknowledging Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, these countries have taken important steps toward a just and durable peace for the people of this region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCanada commends the leadership of United States President Donald Trump and the achievements made in Washington, D.C., in brokering the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAgreements of this nature, reached through diplomatic negotiations, provide a clear path toward a comprehensive peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan that will help to address the remaining issues \u2013 including the release of all Armenian detainees and prisoners of war, the safe and dignified right of return of Armenian civilians, and the preservation of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCanada takes note of the decision to dissolve the OSCE Minsk Group and remains committed to supporting any future mechanisms that will ensure the principles of the non-use of force and the respect of the territorial integrity and the right for self-determination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
